Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gum tissue around the teeth. While it is usually painless and with few symptoms, most don’t realize it. So is it curable and preventable? Yes! It can be prevented, and it can be reversed by seeing your dentist and hygienist.
The cause of this is the plaque that builds up, and it isn’t removed with brushing and flossing. It turns into tartar, and at the end of this, it builds up the teeth, irritating the gums, and creates a bigger hole for plaque to build up, irritating the gum tissue. While most are caused by bad dental care, pregnant women can have this happen, and for those who go through puberty or menopause, they can have this happen too. Smoking, diabetes, and vitamin deficiencies also cause this.
You may notice it when you brush your teeth that your gums are red and not as firm, and there is blood on the toothbrush or in the sink. Your dentist will look at the gums, so if you need some help, you should see them right away to get this rectified.
Once they do that, chances are, they will work on trying to put together a good regimen for helping you to get rid of it.
Now, you want to get rid of this right away, because if you leave this, it will cause periodontitis, which is much worse, and it causes the teeth to fall out. Now, with the reversing of this, you want to eliminate the tartar causing irritation and help to increase the size of your gums. This is usually done by a cleaning, or if it’s severe and has caused major gum recession, a dental scaling. Once that’s done, you’ll want to take care of this by brushing twice daily, and flossing once a day, usign a mouthwash to help prevent the bacteria buildup. You should make sure that if you do have this, you see the dentist for every single appointment. Usually, depending on the severity, they may ask you to come in more frequently due to the fact that it tends to come back after about 90 days if you’re in bad shape.
Now, what is the best way to prevent this? It shodul be obvious, but if you brush and floss, and take care of your teeth, you won’t have to worry as much about this being a problem with you. Along with that, if you notice something wrong, don’t hesitate to see the dentist. Along with that though, if you aren’t seeing the dentist right away, see them. They can help treat as needed or give you tips to help prevent this if they notice that you’re at risk for this so that you can have healthy teeth and gums that you can be proud of, and teeth that you’ll be much happier with as well. Take care of your oral health today, and do what’s best for your teeth that you feel you can do too.
