The Different Types of Dental Specialists

Sometimes, you may need to see someone who isn’t your ordinary hygenist. A specialist is someone that has additional training after they go to a dental school. This is like a surgeon, who went to school for regular doctoral work, but then become specialized.

First, you have the endodontist, which is the root canal specialists. They specialize in diagnosing and also treating the issues within the tooth, and they handle the root canals.

There is also the oral and maxillofacial surgeon, which is someone that handles a lot of the deeper issues in the hard and soft tissues, and this is beyond nitrous and laughing gas.  They handle the different sedation levels, including extractions, surgery, and even cleft palate surgery.

There is also the orthodontist.  These are the guys that will handle your bite, whether through the use of aligners, braces, palatal expanders, or even headgear.  Children see these dentists earlier on, and adults can too if they have teeth that are out of alignment.

You also have a pediatric dentist, which is good for children.  they’re better at handling children, including the cleanings, eams and other issues. They also can help with habits, such as thumb sucking, and diagnosis of oral conditions and other childhood issues. So, if you have a child that doesn’t like a dentist, consider sending them to the pediatric specialist instead.

You then have the periodontist, which is the gum specialist.  This is the one that prevents, diagnoses, and treats gum issue, along with other structures of the teeth. They are the gum disease experts, and they can treat and recognize early stages of this, perform minor surgery to resolve severe gum issues, and restore the appearance of the smile. If you have gum disease, your dentist might refer you to this.

Finally, you’ve got the prosthodontist, which is the replacement specialist, that understands how to replace lost and damaged teeth, in order to create a functioning and natural smile.  They work with veneers, implants, crowns, bridges, dentures, and other restorative options. If you’re looking to replace any teeth, restoring them to the former glory that they had before, this is one of the ways to do it, and you can easily get this from your prothodontist.

With the right dentist, you’ll be able to get the right treatment that you can get. Some of these dentists get trained in all of this so you may not have to see twenty different specialists for this. Instead, you’ll be able to see one and get it done, and you’ll be grateful to have that. that’s why it’s important to understand that you’ll want to see different dentists because each of them offer something that will help, and if you’re looking for a dentist that will treat a wide variety of issues or any conditions that you may have, you’ll definitely want to find someone that will easily help you with all these issues and make the experience as seamless as it can be.
